Hello! I'm an associate professor of journalism at the University of Georgia. My Ph.D. is from the School of Journalism at The University of Texas at Austin.
My research focuses on visual communication and solutions journalism. As a principle, I try to incorporate visuals into nearly everything I can. I study how news images are made, selected and interpreted, as well as the photographers themselves in how they define and operate within their field. My solutions journalism work investigates audience effects, how it is conceptualized/created and the interplay of words and images. Check out some of my recent work in both areas here, as well as my public bibliography of solutions and constructive journalism research .
Broadly, I seek to improve our knowledge of both visual communication and solutions journalism while providing guidance and implications to the professional world.
I've presented my research at both national and regional Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication conferences, as well as at the International Communication Association conference and in Brussels, Belgium at the Constructed/Constructive Journalism Conference. My work is published in Journalism, Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, Journalism Studies, Journal of Gender Studies, Visual Communication Quarterly, Digital Journalism, The Agenda Setting Journal and the Research Journal of the International Symposium on Online Journalism.
